❊ SCOPE OF PRACTICE ❊

  • Metabolic syndrome (elevated blood pressure, waist circumference, triglycerides, and glucose with low HDL cholesterol) is a key risk factor for heart disease, osteoarthritis, diabetes, fatty liver, gout, cardiovascular disease and more.

  • We treat overweight and obesity with exercise, nutrition, and behavioral interventions. When needed we can prescribe any of the FDA approved medications.

  • There is more to lipids than LDL and statins. From ApoB to Lp(a), we do a deep dive on the diagnosis and treatment of cholesterol disorders to lower your cardiovascular disease risk.

  • Sleep, environment, exercise, nutrition, and metabolic health all play a big role in keeping our brain healthy and preventing dementia

  • Hypogonadism, erectile dysfunction, low libido, and premature ejaculation are all treated conditions.

  • There is more to menopause and perimenopause than hot flashes. Hormone replacement therapy including estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone therapy have been underused for decades, but are now experiencing a renaissance.

  • Endocrine organs like the pancreas, thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal glands can over or under produce hormones.

  • Injuries from falls are a major mortality risk for older adults. Fortunately, these are largely preventable by maintaining proper strength, balance, and mobility.

  • A silent killer that increases the risk for heart and kidney disease, dementia, and increases mortality. Early diagnosis and treatment are key.

  • Insulin resistance and impaired glucose metabolism can be detected long before Type 2 Diabetes develops with fasting insulin and glucose measurements. We encourage all of our patients to wear a continuous glucose monitor periodically.

  • We aggressively treat lipid disorders to prevent atherosclerosis. Cholesterol panels and cardiac risk equations estimate population level risk, but many of our patients go beyond that with cardiac imaging studies.

  • Sleep is paramount. We use wearable devices for sleep tracking and optimize sleep through behavioral interventions, medication, and supplements when needed.

  • We approach depression and anxiety with multi-modal therapy including cognitive behavioral interventions, alternative medicine, and medication when needed.

  • Advanced cancer screening through whole body MRI and cell free DNA testing (Galleri) are options for patients who want to go beyond mainstream recommendations.

  • Poor gut health is associated with gastrointestinal, metabolic, immunological, and neurological disorders. We take a functional approach to gut health including low processed food diet, pre- and probiotic foods, and expert nutrition consultation.

  • Maintaining adequate bone mass through weight-bearing exercise, avoiding substances that impair bone health, and optimizing calcium and vitamin D intake are key to fracture prevention.

Physician Lead

Matthew Watto, MD, FACP

Dr. Matthew Watto is thrilled to open a new medical practice at Balance where he will combine his passions fitness, health, and wellness with his philosophy that care should be proactive, preventive, and personalized. He’s spent the past 15 years as an internal medicine physician, educator, and medical podcaster.

Personal

Dr. Watto is a husband and proud father of four children who spends a lot of time at swim meets and soccer games. He is a lifelong athlete who enjoys weightlifting, running, and soccer, and still plays in weekly pickup games. He loves reading paper books, mostly sci-fi or non-fiction, and making pizza. He also loves donuts, but rarely eats them. Someday, he will get way too into making bread.

Media

In 2015, he co-founded The Curbsiders, a weekly internal medicine podcast that uses expert interviews to bring listeners clinical pearls, practice-changing knowledge, and bad puns. The show uses a conversational format to explore a wide range of topics in medicine, seeking deeper understanding through expert insights into common clinical scenarios and conundrums. It has released nearly 500 episodes. As co-host and showrunner, Dr. Watto has traveled the country for live podcast interviews with faculty from top medical institutions and has spoken at national conferences. With over 100,000 active monthly listeners, The Curbsiders podcast is a vital resource for clinicians delivering care to millions of patients across the United States and internationally. It has developed into a network of podcasts, including The Cribsiders Pediatric Medicine Podcast, Curbsiders TEACH (a medical education podcast), and Curbsiders Addiction Medicine.

Education & Awards

Dr. Watto received a BS in Human Physiology from Boston University and an MD from Boston University School of Medicine, graduating with honors. He completed his internal medicine residency at Temple University Hospital, where he was voted intern and senior resident of the year. After graduation, he spent four years active duty as a physician and clinician educator in the United States Air Force at Wilford Hall and Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, reaching the rank of Major. He has been a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, and an Adjunct Associate Professor at Uniformed Services University. He has received numerous teaching awards.
